Gash may be one of the younger members of the staff, but his relationship with Matt McCall and the trust the two have built over the last eight years can not be understated. This is one of the main reasons that secured him perhaps the most integral coaching spot with the Minutemen as McCall’s right hand man.

His professional career started in the Atlantic-10 as a Video Coordinator for La Salle. After one year, he joined Tom Crean’s staff in his first year at the University of Indiana. The Hoosiers had a tumultuous 6-25 season as the historic program was in the midst of a rebuild.

Finally, Gash met McCall at Florida Atlantic and the rest is history. Here, he served as the Director of Operations before being promoted to Assistant Coach . Down the road, McCall left to rejoin his Alma mater at Florida, but Gash stayed at FAU for a few years continuing his role as an Assistant and making a huge contribution in terms of recruiting. Eventually, he decided to follow McCall to Florida although it was in a smaller role as a Video Coordinator. The excitement of continuing his relationship with McCall at an SEC powerhouse was too great of an opportunity to turn down.

After one season together at Florida, McCall accepted the head coaching job at Chattanooga and named Gash his assistant coach. The two had great success in their two years for the Mocks and arrive in Amherst as a duo once again.

“Coach McCall has been more than a mentor to me, he believed in me on multiple occasions and I wish to pass that commitment and belief on to the kids we bring into the UMass community. I firmly believe we have the right plan for how to get UMass back to championship standards and I know Coach McCall will stop at nothing to ensure UMass will hang banners in the Mullins Center again.”
